How to calculate flooring needs
Multiply room length × width for the floor area. Then divide by the coverage per box and add waste. For example, a 15 × 12 ft room is 180 sq ft. With 20 sq ft per box and 10% waste: 180 × 1.1 = 198 sq ft ÷ 20 = 9.9 → 10 boxes.
Why add waste?
You will cut planks at walls, around doorways and pipes. Some planks break or have defects. 10% covers normal rooms; go to 15% for diagonal layouts, herringbone, or rooms with many corners.
Laminate vs. vinyl vs. hardwood
The math is the same, but check the box coverage — hardwood usually covers less per box (thicker planks) than laminate. Also buy from the same dye lot: plank colors vary between batches.

Should I buy an extra box of flooring?
Yes. Keep one extra box for future repairs — flooring lines get discontinued, and matching later is often impossible.
What is the difference between sq ft needed and boxes?
Flooring is sold by the box. The calculator first finds the total sq ft (with waste), then divides by the box coverage and rounds up to whole boxes.
Does underlayment count?
No. Underlayment is usually sold separately by the roll and covers its own area — check the roll label.
